Mills River: A Rich History in Agriculture, A Vibrant Future in Growth

Considered the second largest town in the county, Mills River is the kind of community that celebrates its rich history while still looking forward to the future.

Here you can enjoy a spirited game of tennis with loved ones, learn about the community’s agricultural history, enter the Pisgah National Forest and even enjoy a quiet day of fishing – all within town limits.

This community, which is located in western Henderson County near Etowah and Fletcher, had a population of almost 7,000 residents – although that figure is likely to grow when readers discover all of the great things this community has to offer!

A Strong History That Dates Back to the 18th Century

As previously mentioned, Mills River enjoys a rich history in agriculture.

Although it wasn’t incorporated until June 2003, this community’s history actually goes back to the late 18th century.

In fact, many of the town's residents are direct descendants of the original landowners and continue to own that land.

In the early 2000s, Mills River was incorporated in order to gain control over development. Residents thought this was paramount to the community’s future. Now, these same individuals work hard to preserve the town's farmland, homes and businesses.

The town has also implemented regulations for developers since its inception in order to control how the land is divided and zoned.

Mills River: Where There’s Never a Shortage of Fun and Recreation

As previously mentioned, the Mills River Recreational Area is located near the entrance to Pisgah National Forest and is a popular day use area for hikers, fishermen and mountain bikers.

Meanwhile, the North Mills River Campground is open year-round, offering about 32 level campsites and a picnic area.

Residents living here also love to frequent Mills River Park, which surrounds Town Hall. This park is particularly special for residents because the Mills River runs along the northern boundary of the property

The master plan for this facility calls for the ultimate inclusion of ball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, multiuse trails, a dog park, shelters and support facilities

This plan also calls for fishing piers with handicapped access and a boat launch for non-motorized vessel. It also calls for picnic areas to enjoy the river.

And did I mention that this community is located conveniently close to larger cities like Asheville, Hendersonville, and Brevard? These communities provide some of the best shopping and dining amenities in the region!
